Tytan
The Tydfil Tytans host multiple events across each academic year. These events are almost always hosted by learners studying at the college. Below are a few examples of events that different Tytans have hosted while studying at The College Merthyr Tydfil.
F1 Charity Event 2024
At the end of the academic year, the Tydfil Tytans hosted an F1 charity event at the college using their F1 simulator. This event was in support of Mind, who are the national association for mental health in both Wales and England.

The event ran all day on 26/06/2024, inviting learners and staff at the college to compete to see who the fastest driver was...
The event was run by the Tydfil Tyan's manager, Nathan, as well as four of the tytans at the time; Sam, Leo, Cohen and Jack (from left-to-right).

The event was a huge success, having dozens of learners and staff set their fastest lap times throughout the day. Thanks to the team's hard work, as well as the generosity of the learners and staff at the college (plus the viewers on Twitch!) the Tydfil Tytans raised £145.72 in aid of Mind.

Valorant Tournament
One of our Level 3 Esports students and Valorant IGL, Cohen Ackerman-Card (or as he is also known; Mystic), hosted a 1v1 Valorant tournament for players at the college.
Cohen was looking to push himself out of his comofrt zone, so wanted to try out shout casting over the competition as a whole, serving both as a host and a commentator for his viewers on Twitch - not a small task!

Cohen took several learners from the college and threw them into a 1v1 tournament where they'd face off against each other to earn the number 1 spot! There was some great competition throughout the event, but in the end, it all came down to Koopa and He1nZ (Leo and Kian), both Tytans, with Koopa playing for the Valorant team, and He1nZ leading the Overwatch team.

This event was in support of Cohen's Level 3 Esports qualification, which required him to host a live-streamed event. Cohen went on to push himself even further, and hosted a Pokemon Go even for his final major project.

Blender Competition
Esports is all about competition within gaming, and in 2023, Gavin Williams (Mizraen) wanted to mix this competitive world with the games development industry. Gavin is a talented 3D artist, having put many hours into Blender personally, he wanted to put our Games Development students skills to the test...
Gavin hosted a competition which asked 10 Games Development learners to create a weapon from one of three pre-determined genres; Sci-Fi, Medieval and Fantasy. The learners were given a strict time limit of an hour and a half to design, create and texture their models before they were submitted for judging by Gavin and the Tydfil Tytan's manager, Nathan (who teaches both Blender and Unreal Engine to the games learners).

There were some fantastic models created, with a wide range of weapons and tools being developed over the tight time limit. The genres that were given to the learners prompted them to create lots of interesting ideas like; ranged weapons, magical staffs, swords, sledgehammers and even a fully animated sci-fi blaster-style rifle!

This event was part of Gavin's Unit 5 assessment for his BTEC Extended Diploma in Esports.
F1 Sim Competition
If you searched the web for the term "F1 enthusiast", you'd find a picture of Ethan Edwards. Ethan was one of our Level 3 Esports learners who has a passion for the world of F1, leading him to sink many hours into becoming a top-tier driver himself.

Ethan took his passion for F1 and decided to turn it into an event using the college's brand new F1 racing simulator. After lots of planning and risk assessments Ethan hosted the college's first "F1 Staff Day" for tutors (and some learners) at The College Merthyr Tydfil.

The event was run on a staff training day, and proved to be extremely popular! Many tutors from around the college made their way up to try out the brand new sim to race around Austria's F1 circuit, all with the aim of reaching the top of the leaderboard. Ethan's event capitalised on the competitive nature of many of the tutors at the college, as lots of the returned throughout the day to make sure that their times weren't being beaten by their colleagues!
