Gender Diversity in Esports

At the end of the 2024/2025 winter term, a journalist from ITV visited the college to interview the Tydfil Tytan's manager, as well as several female Tytans to discuss the work that the Tydfil Tytans and The College Merthyr Tydfil are doing to help encourage female learners to step into the Esports Industry.
Historically, the esports course at The College Merthyr Tydfil has been overwhelmingly male dominated, without a single female learner being present in the 21/22, 22/23 and 23/24 cohorts. However, for the first time, the 24/25 cohort saw three female learners break the mold by starting their studies in Esports at The College Merthyr Tydfil.

ITV News wanted to know how we were trying to promote a better gender diversity, not just in the course, but in the esports industry as a whole.

The following segment aired on Good Morning Britain, ITV Lunchtime News and ITV News at Six on 30/12/2024.
Alisha Jones and Cariad Williams, who are both learners on Level 3 Esports, were both interviewed for the above segment. As well as studying Esports, both Alisha (SlySpeedy) and Cariad (MAOMAO) are members of Athena, which is the Tydfil Tytans Overwatch team that competes in the British Esports Student Champs.
